Hello and welcome back.    In this article, I am going to try to clear up some misconceptions around the droid mini pc computers that have been sweeping the market.   The popular Rikomagic MK802 iv and the Mk902 have been leading the marked in droid min pc computers that have the ability to transform a television or computer monitor into a Android Jelly Bean quad core mini computer.

Although a droid mini pc is cool and fun to play with, it in no way has the horsepower and flexibility that a full fledged Windows, Apple or Linux based PC has.   The droid mini pc does cost about 1/4 the price.   One has to have realistic expectations when it comes to choosing which mini pc to buy.    Windows programs will not run on droid min pc computers.   If you need to run Windows programs on a mini pc, these are your options:

  1. If you want to use a droid mini pc, you must use thin client software, such as Citrix, to run Microsoft Windows Programs.
    1. The applications are really running on the Citrix Server.
    2. The droid mini pc appears to be running the app, but only mouse clicks, keyboard input and screen shots are being transferred.

  2. If you must run Windows software locally…
    1. You need a Windows Mini Pc – See my article on building a Windows Mini Pc.
    2. You need a Linux Mini Pc that runs a Windows emulation, such as virtual box or wine.

There may be a few other options, but these are the most viable.

You may be saying, but wait!  Didn’t you have an article on running Linux on the Rikomagic MK802iv?  Yes, I wrote an article on that, but the Linux distro that works on the Rikomagic MK802iv devices, also known as Picuntu, are scaled down versions of Linux.   The device simply does not have the horse power to run a windows emulator on top of Linux, and then your Windows program with acceptable performance.

I really wanted to make that clear so that you understand that a droid mini pc is just that… a droid min pc.   But being Android has its advantages, too:

  • Low Cost
  • Easy To Use – People with an Android Cell Phone are already familiar with the Android OS
  • Very Small with no moving parts
  • Can run Android programs
  • Uses next to no power
  • You can do all your core Internet tasks, such as Email, Web Browsing, etc.

A droid mini pc can be a cool little device after all, if you keep things in context.   I have a lot of fun with these devices and they work quite well.   While not Apple or Windows, the droid mini pc has its place in small footprint computing.   I hope you have found this article enjoyable and useful .
