Introducing The MK902 Android Mini PC

Rikomagic released a new model of Android based mini-pc called the Rikomagic MK902.   While this new mini pc is a little larger than the popular MK802iv and shares many of its features, it does have a few enhancements that make it a hot new device.

UPDATE: Check out my LATEST article comparing the Rikomagic MK902 to the Raspberry Pi.

The Rikomagic MK902 has an external WIFI antenna, that can be helpful in increasing the performance of WIFI reception.  In addition, the new mini pc comes equipped with a built in Ethernet port, so that you can hard wire it directly to your network.    This is a very nice feature if you want a rock solid network connection that you can use for streaming large video files over your network.   Let’s face it, most folks buying these devices want to set up a really cool Android based entertainment system.   The Rikomagic MK902 lets you exactly that.

One feature I really love on this new Rikomagic Mini PC is the built in 5MP Camera.    Imagine the possibilities with using this device for video conferencing, SKYPE, or other applications.    In today’s world, many times families are spread out over larger geographical locations.    Having a Rikomagic MK902 can help bridge that distance by allowing families to visit each other over the Video Conference.   In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if families used the device to connect two dining rooms together across the globe to have a virtual holiday dinner.

The hardware specs are very similar to the MK802iv. The Rikomagic MK902 has a Rockchip RK3188 ARM Cortex-A9 quad-core processor, which is really fast and powerful.   Like the MK802iv, it also has the Mali 400 graphics, 2GB of RAM, 8GB to 16GB of built-in memory, Bluetooth, built in WiFi with an external antenna.   There is also a slot for an Micro SD Card for additional storage, up to 32GB.

The four extra USB ports that are provided on this unit are really nice to have.  This give you flexibility in connecting peripherals to the mini computer.   On the front of the device, there is also a 5MP camera and a built-in microphone that can be helpful in video conferencing and making voice calls.

These are the specifications for the Rikomagic MK902 mini pc:

Just like the Rikomagic MK802iv, the MK902 has an Android based operating system that will enable you to install a whole library of Android Applications.    I previously wrote an article for the MK802iv where I was discussing must have Android apps for that device.   The apps are the same for this device as well.   You can refer to that article here.

The Rikomagic MK902 also connects to your HD Television in the same way as the MK802iv, via the HDMI Port.  However, you can also connect it to your TV with standard AV ports as well.   Of course, you will get the best quality video with the HDMI connection, but you have the option with the MK902 to use AV ports and you do not have that option with the MK802iv.

I also see this device being used in a similar way as I described the MK802iv in business applications.   Using thin client software, like I described here for the MK802iv, the MK902 can be used in exactly the same way.     Similarly, I have read that a Linux distribution of Picuntu is being worked on for the MK902, so soon you will have the ability to run Linux on this device as well.

In conclusion, I would have to say that I actually like the Rikomagic MK902 better than the MK802iv.  While it is a little bigger and has about the same performance, it is nice to have the extras.   The Camera, Microphone , Ethernet, External WiFi Antenna and extra USB ports make the MK902 a really nice addition to Rikomagic’s family of Android based Mini Pc.   Thanks for reading my article on the newest addition to the family, the Rikomagic MK902
